The Legion of Mary is the largest Catholic evangelizing organization in the world, with three million active and ten million praying members of every race , nationality and age.
The object of the Legion is holiness, for its members and for the whole world, by providing a system for personal spiritual growth and proven evangelizing action.
The Legions’ beginning was on September 7, 1921, after Frank Duff, the founder, and others had been discussing St. Louis de Montfort’s book True Devotion to Mary ; from the pages of this classic work the Legion of Mary was born. It was as if Mary visited them as their Mentor and Queen, inviting them to share in her Motherhood as she cares for her son in all mankind.
The Legion of Mary is proud of its founder Servant of God Frank Duff: its members Venerable Edell Quinn and Servant of God Alphie Lambe, whose Causes for Beatification are progressing in Rome, and for the four thousand Chinese Legionaries martyred in the 1950s.
Once Frank Duff was asked to give a summary of the Legion, he said, “ The Legion of Mary is Mary all over again . . .we must share her anxiety for souls and we must go to them!”
